Our world is in peril.

Our lifestyle is contributing to the slow rise in global temperatures. Our indulgence has created unfathomable class disparity. Our desire for more, more, more is sowing the seeds of ruin.

What can we do?

Learning how to be more sustainable creates a thriving world for future generations. Through small changes, we can reverse the negative impact. This article shares concepts to help do your part in caring for the environment and society.

Remember the First Two R’s

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

Many people have a strong concept of the third — recycle — but it’s the first two that get neglect.

Reducing consumption lessens the demand for products we don’t need. This, in turn, eliminates wasteful production. It also creates an incentive to create quality products that last. Less is more in this regard and this changeover does wonders for the environment.

Reusing (and repairing) items are another simple way to lessen our negative impact. Many companies don’t want consumers to repair their products, leading to tons of waste. Giving a second life to goods means less wasteful production and use of resources.

Let the Money Talk

A large boycott is effective in forcing companies to adapt to consumer demands. The same effect happens when consumers shift brands due to ethics. One such example is the shift to products made from biodegradable materials.

Vegan, non-toxic materials, and sustainably produced.

These are just a few of the product shifts we are seeing on our store shelves. At scale, this cuts down on millions of harmful products reaching landfills yearly. And, it pumps more money into the science that further refines sustainable practices.

A Carnivorous Change

Meat production — especially beef — requires a shocking amount of resources. These are resources we can use toward taking care of our fellow humans. Or, put toward sustainable food practices that aren’t adding to hefty carbon emissions.

It’s the small changes that make an impact:

  • Reduce the amount of meat consumed each week
  • Buy from sustainable, earth-friendly brands
  • Stop wasting food, letting it expire, and go to the bins

Reducing our carnivorous ways will improve society by way of better health, too. Red meat, specifically, is known to increase the risk of heart disease. Imagine if that increased burden wasn’t on the already strained healthcare system!

Advocate for Good

A vocal minority can cause the majority to tune in and take note.

Local advocacy for eco-friendly, sustainable practices creates a big global impact. From expanding community spaces and bike lanes to cleanup projects and more, there’s a lot one can do. As the movement picks up, so does the positive impact of the proposed ideas and concepts.
