Desserts You Need to Try if You’re Going to Italy

Are you planning on heading off on an Italian adventure? If so, one thing you’ll really want to immerse yourself in while you’re there is the food.

Italy is renowned for its delicious, fresh cuisine. While it’s pasta and pizza offerings are certainly not to be missed, there’s also quite a few mouth-watering desserts you’ll want to try. Here, we’ll look at some of the top desserts you’ll absolutely need to try if you’re going to Italy.

Affogato

The Affogato is a delicious Italian dessert which first became popular in the 90’s. Like many desserts in Italy, the inspiration behind this dessert is ice cream and espresso. The ice cream is placed within a glass, before being placed in the freezer for the glass to go ice cold. Espresso is then served on top of the ice cream.

It sounds like a strange combination, but it’s surprisingly delicious. As you travel around Italy, you’ll find many places serve up this classic dessert.

Tiramisu

Perhaps the most famous dessert you’ll enjoy on your cultural getaway, is the classic Tiramisu. Again, this is very much a coffee inspired dessert, only it has the same comforting factor as cake.

It combines coffee, sweet mascarpone and cocoa and its name literally translates to “pick me up”. As you travel around Italy, you’ll also come across several variations of this classic dessert. Some choose to add fruit, while others use ingredients such as Nutella to make it even more appealing.

Cannoli

If you’re a pastry fan, you’ll love the Cannoli. These deep-fried pastry tubes come filled with a mouth-watering creamy filling. Sweetened ricotta cheese tends to be the filling of choice in Italy, though it is possible to find other variations. They are especially popular in Sicily.

Struffoli

Finally, if you’re looking to try something unique, Stuffoli is exactly what you need. This is a dessert the kids will love due to its sweetness and fun appeal. It’s basically deep-fried tiny dough balls that are crunchy on the outside and nice and light on the inside. They’re also coated with honey, cinnamon and sprinkles.

These are just some of the delicious desserts you should absolutely try when heading to Italy. Each country has its own unique desserts which can prove surprisingly delicious. So, don’t be afraid to try something new to satisfy your sweet tooth while you’re exploring all that Italy has to offer.
